Stay at Clearbrook

Once the dower house to the grand Middleton Hall (now the National Botanic Garden of Wales which is directly opposite Clearbrook), Clearbrook has evolved from a 19th-century cottage and coach house into a tranquil retreat where heritage and hospitality meet.

Clearbrook Lodge and Meadow Cottage are Grade II listed, built of Georgian stone, full of charm and built in 1831. They enjoy an elevated position overlooking wild meadow and landscaped grounds, each with private enclosed gardens, set in beautiful paddocks and managed woodland. The estate’s lake is directly behind the cottages, up a gentle slope. These properties offer an ideal retreat for families and friends yearning for a relaxing escape. After a day spent wandering around 55 acres of enchanting landscaped grounds, natural woodland, ponds, past sheep and bee hives, and over specially crafted wooden bridges spanning winding streams, why not go for a wild swim in the picturesque one-acre lake or paddle board around the island in its centre, just behind the cottages? As the sun fades, enjoy a barbeque with the sound of birdsong and nature, or move inside and gather around a cosy woodburning stove.

Given the importance of being environmentally minded, both cottages are warmed via water sourced heat straight from the lake. Electricity is generated via solar power and the cottages’ water source is straight from the fresh spring, coming via the borehole and aquifer before being filtered and UV treated. Mineral water straight to your tap, shower and bath!

Immerse yourself in the beauty of the area, with unspoilt villages, castles, galleries, and beaches (Wales Coast Path 20 mins drive) and the National Botanic Garden next door, boasting an array of stunning plants, eye-catching landscapes, café, restaurant, garden centre and regular events.

Clearbrook Tales

Clearbrook Tales: a poem inspired by Geof Spavins’ Clearbrook retreat

At Clearbrook Lodge by twilight’s grace,
Jemma’s smile lit up the place.

Talk of trails and paddling dreams,
Of leafy paths and tranquil streams.

We claimed our space, then Sarn appeared,
The talk of land both loved and weird

Where rowing boats await the breeze
And paddle boards skim willow trees.

The gardens called us Saturday morn,
With blooms in sun, where steps were worn.

We vowed to watch the falcons’ flight
On future days of feathered might.

Sunday drifted, slow and kind,
With BBQs and peace of mind.

While Monday’s chip-salt kissed the skin,
On Pendine sands where laughs begin.

Tuesday’s wetlands soaked our feet,
Cranes waltzed through the grasses sweet

A feather found, now proudly placed,
A badge of nature, finely graced.

Wednesday brought a second chance,
To see the falcons swoop and dance.

Then gardens bloomed beneath our stride,
With nature walking by our side.

Thursday’s waves and dolphin cheer,
From Oxwich Bay to Worm’s Head near.

The seals blinked slow, the seabirds skimmed,
While laughter rode the ocean’s wind.

A stop at heritage, mill and stream,
With Welsh cawl’s warmth and cider’s gleam.

We walked through stories, old and bright,
In leet-fed halls of shared delight.

And now we pack with hearts aweight,
For leaving dreams we’d love to wait.

Clearbrook whispers in the air
“Come back, and find your stories here.”
